How You Can Triple Win In Your Business

What can be more tempting than a sustainable solution that benefits your business in three ways - socially, economically and environmentally?

You can triple win in your business by doing the following:

  1. Reducing your use of resources and CO2 footprint.
  2. Reducing operating costs and empowering members of the team to take personal responsibility in the fight to reduce emissions.
  3. Use the approach ‘trust is built’, create a culture of transparency in communication, with customers and the community in which the business operates.

To triple win in your business it can be achieved through education of the team that this has the greatest impact: socially (training, upskilling, career progression, investing in your team and improved communication), economically (reductions and efficiency means cost savings) and environmentally (reduction in usage means less CO2 emissions): the triple win.

This blog article will help your business embed a triple win strategy.

Know your numbers

In last week’s blog I spoke about personal accountability when it comes to Climate Change.

Link to Blog; https://www.fiftyshadesgreener.ie/blog/climate-change-why-personal-responsibility-matters

I also shared my own story of how I became empowered to start doing something about Climate Change myself, however small the action. I learned and still advocate for taking ownership of your own daily life and how you can lessen your impact on the environment, because small actions DO count.

Therefore this week I wanted to pick up from the conversation that started last week.

How do we influence people to feel the same empowerment?

How do we make them see that there is something that EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US can do?

If you do not know what it is you can do, you will feel like it is an impossible task and so therefore you will not do anything about it. It becomes a problem for the “impossible box” and you feel demoralised, despair, powerless.

For me, empowerment comes from education, fr...

Climate Change - Why personal responsibility matters

Last week I saw the amazing Clover Hogan, a young climate activist from Australia give a TEDTalk

The link to her talk is on this week's written blog on our website, I encourage you to watch it - it's fantastic!

“Climate change is not your responsibility, because it is outside your control, but what is your responsibility, is the things inside your control.”

So what does Personal Responsibility for Climate means?

For me, it all comes down to the things I have been speaking about on my weekly blogs for the past 2 years.

You can choose to;

1. Continue to live your life as you are..

OR

2. Continue to live your life with an added commitment to reducing your impact on the planet.

Two clear choices and no wrong answer.

YOU are in charge of your life and what do you with it is completely up to you.

I would not chastise anyone for choosing Option 1, however know that I am choosing Option 2 because I want to look back on my life in 10 years time and know that I did everything I poss...

Make America Great Again

Make America Great Again has been one of the taglines used by President Donald Trump since 2016. For me, the connotation of this tagline is to make America great at the expense of other nations, economies and even species.

It is no secret that Trump’s presidency is based on a ruthless ideology of capitalism over anything else, but one of the most dangerous aspects of his presidency is the lifted protections for at-risk animals as part of his aggressive rollback of environmental rules.

Biodiversity in the world is at its worst state in human history, 1 million land and marine species across the globe are threatened with extinction.

In a now “usual” spectacle of ignorance, the Trump administration has lifted protections for America’s animals and opened up a huge amount of federal land for oil and gas drilling, coal mining and other industrial activities.

My business is your opportunity

When I first founded Fifty Shades Greener in 2017, my mission was to help Green the Hospitality industry in Ireland. It was a simple mission and quite achievable, little did I know my “vision” would grow legs from there, and 3 years later I would be expanding to international markets.

I have worked in the Hospitality Industry all my life, since I was 17, starting in night clubs, moving to Hotels and climbing the ranks over the years. I loved working in the industry, I have met the most amazing people through the places I have worked in, but as I near my 40’s, there were many reasons why I knew I needed a change.

  • The hours are long
  • The life style is fast paced
  • The patience sometimes starts thinning!!

Discovering the concept of “Green Hospitality” was a life changer for me. All of a sudden, I realised there was more to hospitality than I originally thought. It is not just about serving customers, making budgets and a good RevPar every month. Resource efficiency is an area that H...

Do we know the real price of cheap flights?

The second most polluting industry in Ireland, according to the Climate Action Plan released a few weeks ago, is transport. The plan is aggressive in it’s targets to face out diesel and petrol cars, and my mind always goes to those that can not afford and electric car.

How will higher fuel tax affect lower income families?

Imagine a young family of four, with two parents working at a rate slightly up from the minimum wage. They can’t get into the property ladder because their salaries and the standard of living does not allow them save for the required deposit. The rely in their cars to go to work because they can’t afford rent in the city and public transport outside the city is just nearly non existent.

Most their wages go on rent, petrol and child minding.

They will not be in a position to buy an electric car in the next years.

They will be even in a worse position as time goes by and carbon tax increases, putting petrol in their cars will become a luxury.

How is the new Clima...

Green Marketing, no green washing, align your business!

Yesterday I saw and add on telly for Mout Cider. The add simply highlighted three things: A fully recyclable glass bottle, a cider that is vegan, and that the company are allied to the World Wildlife Fund that protects endangered species.  I was sitting on the couch and I instantly thought “Well that is a nice cider”, the add did not speak about it’s taste, or how refreshing it might be, or what fruit is made with, but the three things they highlighted, are three things I felt aligned too instantly.

Align your business values to your customer values

In a world where society is changing and demanding for companies to change their own mind-sets, a huge opportunity lies for those that are whiling to make that change, to highlight what is seen now as a positive effort towards climate change and protection of the planet.

The add resonated so much with me that this morning I had to get up and find this cider’s website. Unfortunately, the same message does not carry to their website, but I...
