Chocolate with a Conscience

Aug 23, 2021

Recently, we met with Clare Tait, the founder and owner of Chocolatey Clare, an Irish business making a range of luxury confectionary.  The products are vegan-friendly; dairy, gluten and palm-oil free; with ethically sourced, where possible -organic ingredients; and plastic free packaging.

At Fifty Shades Greener, we have broadened our green business online and training programmes to include social sustainability, green purchasing and green marketing.

We want to share how important it is to generate sustainability throughout all our business practices, and that includes who we partner with.  We always love to celebrate an Irish product and particularly one that is environmentally friendly.

Clare Tait has considered sustainable elements from the inception of her business.  She quotes greener.ie explaining “true sustainability is about understanding your supply chain and working with the right partners, not focusing on your business in isolation”. Clare works to ensure that all workers who take part in the supply chain of her products are ethically treated and properly paid.

Working with a sustainable partner only furthers our own business’ sustainability.  For example, Clare partners with Priory Press Packaging printers.  Their sustainable practices include renewable energy, thermal imaging process that eliminates chemicals from their plates, which are recycled, and natural vegetable-based inks instead of petroleum-based. Another partner is EcoXpress couriers; at present, the only national zero emissions courier company - with all electric vehicles.

It is fantastic to see an Irish business showing that greening our supply chain and purchasing from other green businesses is possible.

Yes, it requires some research but what we discover along the way are like-minded people and well-thought-out products and services. The more businesses that come together the stronger the sustainability message will be – for the customer, and for other businesses who have not yet joined these practices.

There are businesses that really want to be sustainable – not only economically, but environmentally and socially too.
